Joseph J. Weinfurtner, 99, of Marshfield, died on Monday, Aug. 14, 2016 at Wells Nature View Assisted Living, Marshfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Daniel Sedlacek officiating. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1866. The visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Joseph Jacob Weinfurtner was born on June 4, 1917 in Marshfield, to Alfred M. and Appolonia K. (Ehrenreich) Weinfurtner. He attended local schools and his first employment was at Weber’s Grocery Store on the corner of 4th Street and Central Avenue, Marshfield. He married Rose A. Gleisner on June 4, 1941 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Marshfield. Shortly after he was drafted into the Army, serving with the European Theater during World War II. He was wounded in the Vosges Mountains of France, receiving the Purple Heart. Returning home, he opened a grocery store on Arlington Avenue, Joe’s Stop and Shop. He later worked in the mobile home industry and had his own floor covering business, Joe’s Floor Covering.
He spent many Sundays fishing on Spirit Lake with friends, George Devine and Nubs Neihaus. He liked listening to polka music and playing sheepshead at the Senior Center. He was very proud to have served as president at the Senior Center and St. John’s Chapter of St. Vincent DePaul.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Jane (Orville) Kloke of Eau Claire, grandson, Timothy (Michelle) Kloke and great grandchildren, Ava and Noah of Victoria, MN, grandson, Gregory (Sara) Kloke and great grandchildren, Daniel, Katie, Lydia and Samuel of Columbia, SC. He is also survived by a sister, Rosemary Janzen of Marshfield and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose in 2001, a daughter, Marjorie in 1954, and brothers Louis, Alfred, Jr. and Walter Weinfurtner, and sisters, Magdalene Brockman, Regina Schultz and Marie Kroening.
