Tigers fall to 1-4 in WVC

WAUSAU — The Marshfield boys soccer team overcame a slow start to tie the game but could not hold on and dropped a 6-4 decision at Wausau East on Thursday.

The Tigers fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with the loss. Wausau East is now 5-5 and 3-2 in conference play.

Max Sorenson scored four goals for the Lumberjacks, all in the first half. His first came just 50 seconds into the game, and his last was with just three seconds remaining in the half as East built a 5-2 lead.

Isaac Wellens had a penalty kick, and Blaine Neinast scored in the first half for the Tigers.

Kyle Tremelling and Elijah Hubler-Marti scored in the first 15 minutes of the second half for Marshfield to tie the game, but that was all the Tigers would get.

Zidane Charles hit on a penalty kick at the 64:07 mark, and Ryan Keefe score less than three minutes later to push East to the win.

“The boys played some good soccer,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “We had a bad start, gave them a goal less than a minute into the game, and a heartbreaker with three seconds left in the half.

“To a person, I think every player has stepped up and made themselves and our team better. If we keep improving like we are, the results are soon to follow.”

Marshfield plays a nonconference game at Menasha on Friday and returns to WVC action Tuesday at Wausau West.
