MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team scored two goals in the first 5 minutes and held off Onalaska 4-2 to win its 2014 season opener Tuesday at Griese Park.

Junior Hunter McManus scored at the 1:54 mark and Chris Pahl added a goal 4:47 into the game, both on assists from Thomas Kruger, to put Marshfield up 2-0 early.

Onalaska quickly struck back with a goal from Bjarki Siguardson 32 seconds later, but McManus added another goal at the 19:46 mark to put Marshfield up 3-1 at halftime.

Siguardson scored again for Onalaska at 57:01, but the Hilltoppers wouldn’t strike again.

Ryan Hayes added a goal off a McManus assist with 6:25 remaining to ice the victory for the Tigers and give first-year head coach Steve McCann his first varsity victory.

Marshfield outshot Onalaska 22-6.

The Tigers play a nonconference game Friday at Wauwatosa West and will play a pair of games at the Sun Prairie Quadrangular on Saturday.
