Columbus/Spencer’s Ben Alt, Marshfield’s Derek Michalski compete at WIAA state boys golf tournament

Alt shoots 79, Michalski 85 on opening day at University Ridge

VERONA — Columbus Catholic/Spencer senior Ben Alt is in a five-way for 13th place after the first day of the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club.

Alt shot a seven-over par 79 to finish seven shots behind Division 2 co-leaders Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls and Logan Walzer of Lodi. Alt will tee off at noon on the 10th hole Tuesday as the two-round tournament wraps up.

Alt had birdies on holes No. 1 and 2 and had seven pars and two bogeys to shoot a 2-over-par 38 on the back nine.

In Division 1 Marshfield junior Derek Michalski shot a 13-over-par 85 and is in an eight-way tie for 78th place out of the 104-player field.

Michalski had nine-hole scores of 44 and 41. He had one birdie, on the par-4 15th hole, and six pars in his round.

Michalski will tee off on hole No. 1 at noon on Tuesday.

Middleton’s Emmet Herb shot a 4-under-par 68 and leads by five shots in the Division 1 standings.

Stevens Point, which qualified as a team, is fifth in the team standings after shooting a 311 on Monday. Milwaukee Marquette shot a 7-over-par 295 to lead all teams.
