MARSHFIELD – Coming off a 2024 season for which he won his first career Gold Glove Award, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho has been getting noticed lately for what he’s been doing at the plate.
The Marshfield native hit home runs in three consecutive games Sept. 1-3 versus Cincinnati.
In a Sept. 3 win over the Reds, Varsho went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Daulton’s solo blast in the fourth inning helped the Blue Jays overcome a 5-0 deficit.
The long ball was Varsho’s 18th of the season, in just 51 games.
As of Sept. 3, Daulton was averaging a home run in every ten at-bats this season. His OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging) since returning from an injury was .986.
Varsho had missed a few games after getting hit on his right hand by a 97-mile per hour pitch in an Aug. 29 versus Milwaukee. X-rays were negative and he returned to the Toronto lineup on Labor Day, when he slammed a solo homer in a 5-4 loss to the Reds.
Daulton, who turned 29 in July, began the 2025 season on Toronto’s Injured List while still recovering from shoulder surgery performed during the off-season.
Varsho returned at the end of April and picked up where he had left off in 2024.
Videos of a catch Daulton made in an April 29 game against Boston have gone viral several times over.
With the bases empty and one out in the top of the fourth inning, Red Sox leadoff hitter Jarren Duran sent a fly ball towards Varsho in center field.
As he turned to chase the ball, Daulton stumbled and fell to the ground. As he recovered, Varsho – now on one knee – stuck his left arm out and behind his back to make the back-handed grab.
A month later, a hamstring injury suffered May 31 in a game versus Oakland sidelined the Blue Jays outfielder for June and July.
He rejoined the team Aug. 1.
As of Sept. 4, the Blue Jays had the second-best record in MLB (81-59), behind only the Milwaukee Brewers (86-54).
