Letter to the Editor: Immigration and fake news
Dear editor,
As a member of First Presbyterian Church’s Immigration Action Team, I say its fake news, folks. Undocumented workers are not eligible for and do not receive CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance), Social Security disability or food stamps (SNAP), Medicaid, Medicare or welfare. And, they can’t get a driver’s license.
The IRS estimates that undocumented workers pay over $9 billion in payroll tax withholding and make our social security system stronger by paying in but never being eligible to receive benefits upon retirement. They use an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) to process taxes through the IRS with no hope of benefiting from those payments.
These hard workers clean our motel rooms, milk our cows, work in our meat processing plants, pick our fruits and vegetables and are paid less than a living wage with none of the benefits. Taking jobs from Americans? That’s fake news too.
