MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield American Legion Post 54 baseball team got off to a slow start this summer, but the Blue Devils have turned things around in the past week.

After three losses in three days to start the season, Marshfield continued league play at Wisconsin Rapids on June 12. After scoring 12 runs in their first three games, the Blue Devils were held scoreless at Witter Field, losing to the Post 9 Rangers 1-0. Ethan Peters threw a four-hit shutout to get the win. Mason Coffren wasn’t too bad in the loss, either. Coffren surrendered just one run on four hits. Offensively, Greenwood’s Devin Toburen went 2-for-3.

The next night, Marshfield came alive. The Devils beat the Post 6 Sixers 12-6 in Stevens Point. With the game tied at four after five innings, Marshfield broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Toburen had another big night, going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Jake Brueggen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Eli Drexler, Jacob Earll, Logan Matson, and Ryan Krueger drove in runs as well. On the mound, Preston Wagner picked up the win in relief of Dakota Landphier, who surrendered four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one in four and one third innings of work.

On June 14, the Blue Devils won again, this time at Athletic Park in Wausau. Post 54 beat the Post 10 Bulldogs 10-4, thanks in large part to a seven-run sixth inning. Ryan Krueger drove in three of those runs with a bases-clearing double, for his only hit of the game. Brueggen had a two-run base hit as well. Drexler was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in, and Ben Gust had a pair of singles. Brueggen got the win. He scattered four runs and eleven hits over six innings of work. He also walked three and struck out two.

The wins gave Marshfield a 2-4 record heading into scheduled action June 18-19 at Adams-Friendship and versus Merrill.
