WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A 59-year-old Marshfeld man has been charged with first degree intentional homicide for a March 24 shooting at Higher Grounds Bakery and Coffee House in Wisconsin Rapids, which left one man dead.

According to police reports, Gary Bohman was seen on video surveillance inside Higher Grounds Bakery and Coffee House, 4231 Eighth St. South, Wisconsin Rapids, where he pulled out a 9mm pistol and shot 39-year-old Christopher Race in the stomach, while Race was working behind the counter.

A call was made at approximately 1:08 p.m., where police would find the victim. Race was declared dead at the scene.

Bohman was located in the bakery parking lot. After initial questioning, a 9mm pistol was found on Bohman, and he was taken into custody.

Court documents do not declare a motive, but Rapids police have confirmed that the owner of the bakery and coffee house is Bohman’s ex-wife, and that he and the victim knew each other.

Bohman’s initial appearance in Wood County Court is scheduled for April 2.
