Fatal vehicle vs. carriage crash occurs in town of Hansen

A press release from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A motor vehicle vs. horse-drawn carriage crash was reported at State Highway 73 and Oak Road in the town of Hansen on July 17 at approximately 6:57 p.m. The carriage was southbound on Oak Road and began to cross State Highway 73. The operator of an SUV was westbound on State Highway 73 and struck the carriage, causing both occupants of the carriage to be ejected.

The driver of the carriage was airlifted by Spirit Air to the Marshfield Medical Center. The other occupant of the carriage was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the SUV was transported by Pittsville Ambulance to the Marshfield Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

State Highway 73 was closed until 10:49 p.m. due to this incident. The crash remains under investigation by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.

Agencies that responded to the scene included the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Pittsville Ambulance, Vesper Fire Department, Spirit Air, Wood County Sheriff’s Rescue, Wood County coroner, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Wood County Highway Department.
