MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield wrestling team had not defeated Wisconsin Rapids since 1958, a long losing streak to the perennial Wisconsin Valley Conference and state power.
That changed Thursday night, 58 years later, with a 58-point victory as Marshfield dominated with a 64-6 win at The Boson Company Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers won all but two matches, including eight by pin. Marshfield is now 2-0 in the Valley dual meet season, while Rapids, the defending conference champion and winners of the WVC 20 of the past 24 seasons, falls to 1-2.
Shane Westerhausen (106 pounds), Caden Pearce (132), Conner Peterson (195), and Sam Bauman (220) all had pins in the first period for Marshfield. Caden Dennee (113), Anthony Kanable (138), Bentley Ostermann-Schwanebeck (160), and Alex Brost (182) also had pins for the Tigers.
“This was a great dual meet for the Marshfield wrestling program,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “It was middle school night. It was alumni night. The stands were packed. I knew it was going to be a special day for the program. Marshfield’s wrestling program has been tough throughout its history, but we could never find a way to beat Rapids. The last time Marshfield beat Wisconsin Rapids was in 1958, where the Tigers won by 58 points. The crazy thing is tonight we won by 58 points, and it’s 58 years later.”
Sam Mitchell (170) and A.J. Leonhardt (285) won by decision, and Brayden Richardson (126) had a major decision for the Tigers. Tanner Kanable (120) had the other win for Marshfield by forfeit.
“It’s hard to talk about one specific wrestler who stood out to me during this dual meet,” Hein said. “As a team, we wrestled up to our potential. We had eight pins, won 12 different matches, and were always on the offense. It was a victory long overdue, dedicated to Marshfield’s wrestling alumni. I am so thankful that our alumni showed their support and came to the dual meet. It made it a night we will never forget.”
Marshfield returns to action Dec. 29-30 at the Bi-State Classic at La Crosse.
