STRATFORD — The Stratford wrestling team clinched its third-straight Marawood Conference dual meet title with a dominating 70-0 sweep of Marathon on Thursday night at Stratford High School.

The Tigers won five matches by forfeit, three by pin, and four by major decision as they cruised to the victory and improve to 6-0 in the Marawood with one match remaining at Auburndale on Jan. 28.

The regular-season title is Stratford’s ninth in program history, all coming since 2000.

The Tigers will be looking for their third-straight Marawood Conference Tournament title on Jan. 30 at Pittsville as they come in as the overwhelming favorite.

“That old cliché, ‘One game at a time,’ in our case one match at a time, we try to stress that because as soon as you look past someone, you are going to be stung,” Stratford coach Joe Schwabe said. “Marathon has some good kids, but they just didn’t match up well with us tonight. We won all the close ones tonight, and that made the score what it was.”

Kyle Giebel got things started with a hard-earned 4-1 win at 195 pounds, and after a forfeit Tyson Kauffman earned a second-period pin over Jacob Mohr to put the Tigers up 15-0.

Manny Drexler dominated with a 12-0 major decision at 106 pounds, Jeremy Schoenherr stayed unbeaten at 126 with a pin, and Mason Kauffman kept his perfect record in tact after receiving a forfeit at 152. Schoenherr and Kauffman are both 30-0 this season.

Jordan Becker added a pin at 138, and Derek Marten (132), Sam Wenzel (145), and Dylan Schoenherr (170) each had major decision victories for Stratford.

“These kids practice hard, and I know everybody does, but we happen to have a lot of good kids all at one time,” Schwabe said. “They’re wrestling well with their ‘A’ games right now. They have some big, high hopes that we haven’t achieved before, so it’s one match at a time, and they have been taking it one match at a time. We don’t look past anybody.”
