New dog rescue works to help ‘unwanted’ animals

Posted

MARSHFIELD – A new local dog rescue is working to help local animals through fostering, adoption, education, health services and community outreach.

Copper Paws Rescue, Inc., is named after owner Brittany Schueller’s dog Copper, who was her first rescue and was taken by cancer in 2023.

“So we’re predominantly a dog rescue, so we help dogs in need — whether they come from unwanted places where they don’t have anywhere to go and they need a soft landing or owner surrenders — helping anywhere that we can to help dogs that don’t have a say in what happens to them,” Schueller told host Peggy Sue Behselich on Hub City Presents.

“About a decade now is how long I’ve been rescuing myself, but just about seven months I’ve had a Copper Paws Rescue.”

Schueller said that since she opened Copper Paws a half year ago, she has already rescued 120 puppies and adult dogs and have about 25-30 available.

“On top of the rescue, we also have a large dairy farm; so, it’s kind of like animals are just the center of our lives. But I’ve always just had such a soft spot for animals in need and animals that need that voice,” she added.

Schueller said that they try to keep their Facebook page and website current and potential adopters can apply through their website.

“You go to our website, there’s an Applications tab. You do that. It’s a very quick application,” she said.

“Once I’ve approved that application, then I’ll talk to you about what your experience is, what you’re looking for, what you might think you’re looking for versus what is actually going to be good for your lifestyle, what your home looks like, who’s in there, and then we kind of match you up.

“As far as adoptions go, you know, we’re not looking just to get a dog in and out of the doors as quick as possible. We want the best-case scenario for both the dogs and the adopters. We want to set them up for success. So we’re not going to give you a dog that’s not going to work in your lifestyle, right? We’re going to make sure that it’s positive for everyone.
