SPENCER – Gunhild Carling is a Swedish jazz musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist who plays more than 20 instruments.
At her performance in Spencer this November, audiences can expect to see her effortlessly move between trumpet, trombone, harmonica, bagpipes, oboe, harp, flute and recorder — often switching mid-song.
One of the most unique moments of her show is when she performs on three trumpets at the same time.
“I am the only person in the world who does this,” Carling said.
She also incorporates dancing and juggling, making her concerts as entertaining as they are musical.
Carling first came to the United States during COVID-19 while on tour, which kept her away from her home in Sweden longer than expected.
She quickly fell in love with life in America and, along with her husband, and decided to make San Francisco their new home.
Currently touring across the U.S., Carling will head to Europe in mid-November to join Count Basie Orchestra.
Her musical journey began at just seven years old, following in the footsteps of her parents, Aina and Hans, both accomplished multi-instramentalists.
Music runs deep in the Carling family, spanning three generations.
While her mother gravitates toward classical and traditional music, her father is rooted in the jazz tradition.
Today, Gunhild’s children are continuing the family legacy by playing instruments, singing and even acting.
Spencer’s LuCille Tack Center will welcome Carling — “Sweden’s Queen of Swing” —on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
