920 Chiropractic: How a devastating sports injury inspired a healthcare career

Posted

MARSHFIELD/GREEN BAY — “I never knew what chiropractic was. Growing up, we never went to a chiropractor. I didn’t know what they did, nothing like that. It took that sports injury where I had a stress fracture in my left foot, and I think it happened on Valentine’s Day when there was about six weeks left at the end of the senior season of basketball,” recalls Dr. Hunter Schultz.

“We had a good shot at maybe going to state that year. And so I went to the medical doc, and they took X-rays and told me I had a stress fracture, and they put me in a boot and crutches. And I remember the doctor walking in, and he’s like, ‘You’ve got a stress fracture — your third metatarsal — you’re going to be out for six weeks, no exception.’

“And, you know, I tried to plead with him right there. I’m like, ‘Well, six weeks takes me to the end of the season.’ Like, that’s not going to work, you know. Well, he didn’t really care. He walked out of the room.”

Not only did Schultz’s high school team, Marshfield’s Columbus Catholic, have a shot at getting to state, Hunter was making a run for one of the Don’s career point leaders.

“And so I was pretty devastated at that point. But luckily, Dr. Will Schlinsog, he was watching that game the day that happened, and he’s a chiropractor. He kind of knew my dad a little bit, and so he actually approached my dad the next day, or texted him or something, and said, ‘Hey, why don’t you bring Hunter in and just have me check him out.’ Not promising anything, but it’s a second opinion, you know? And so I came into his office, and he basically just explained how the brain and spinal cord system control everything within the body, and if you have no interference on that system, your body’s going to heal up the best that it possibly can,” Schultz recalled.

“So, I was like, ‘Let’s give it a shot,’ and he gave me some great low back adjustments throughout the next couple of weeks. And to make a long story short, I was back playing basketball in about two and a half weeks instead of six weeks, and I made it back for the regional championship game.”

Schultz made it back for regionals, and the team went all of the way to Div. 5 WIAA state competition to face Barneveld.

After the adjustments, Schultz said he began noticing other things as well.
“I started sleeping really good and my digestion was really good, having more energy and a lot of other things started to just click health-wise, once I started getting adjusted. And when he got me back and my foot healed up that fast, I knew kind of right then and there that I wanted to be a chiropractor,” he said.
After high school, Schultz headed to Loras College and then Marian University to play basketball and obtain his undergraduate degree.

“I got my degree in biology, and then after that, there are only about 18 chiropractic schools in the country. So I decided to follow my mentor, Dr. Will Schlinsog, where he went, down to St Louis, Missouri, Logan College of Chiropractic.”

After another three and a half years of schooling, Schultz now works as a family practitioner in chiropractic, where he specializes in car crash cases and pregnancy/pediatrics.

“So, I see everyone from day-old babies to 80-year-old vets and everything else in-between,” he added.

Last spring, Schultz opened 920 Chiropractic in Green Bay.

“I knew I wanted to open my own business for a while before that, so I was planning and stuff, but looking for spaces around the Green Bay Area. I came over here, kind of because (Hunter’s wife) Mckayla’s family is kind of from around here, and Marshfield was a little too small for us. We wanted to be somewhere a little bit bigger,” he explained.

Though in business for a short time, Schultz has already worked client traffic up to 100 visits a week and has become active in the community, including becoming a big supporter of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
