MARSHFIELD – A warning from police after a Marshfield man fell victim to internet blackmail. The 21-year-old victim told Marshfield police he met an anonymous woman through an online dating site. He said things progressed to the point where the two connected through Skype, and he said nude screenshots of him were captured by the woman.
The victim said she then demanded $1,320 or the images would be shared with his friends, family, and co-workers.
The man said he gave more than $1,000 to an address in the Philippines. The woman demanded an additional $2,500, and that’s when he went to Police Lieutenant Darren Larson.
“If it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Lieutenant Larson said. “Your intuition is strong and we often tell people to rely on it. If you think that this is suspicious, your intuition is telling you and you should ask questions and clarify.”
Larson says the sooner you report scams the better. While they may not be able to catch the person or get your money back, there is a chance if they’re reported immediately.
