Spring Sports Roundup

MARSHFIELD – With warmer and drier weather this past week, central Wisconsin baseball and softball teams have finally been able to get some games in, after record snowfall and wet conditions cancelled or postponed most of the April schedule. The week that led into May was better for some teams than for others.
Marshfield Tigers baseball
The Marshfield Tigers baseball team finally got in the win column, with a pair of wins over Merrill. The Tigers scored a 6-3 come-from-behind win over the Bluejays May 1 at Jack Hackman Field. Merrill took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Marshfield’s offense erupted for five runs.
Will Voss got the complete-game win for the Tigers, giving up five hits and one earned run while walking four and striking out three. Isaiah Baierl had two doubles and two runs batted in, Connor Berry had a double and an RBI, and Mason Coffren had a pair of singles and an RBI.
On May 3, the Tigers beat the Bluejays again, 14-6, at historic Athletic Park in Merrill. Preston Wagner picked up the win for the Tigers. He surrendered seven hits and five runs, and struck out three. Riley Bouschak and Ryan Krueger each had a single, a double, and an RBI. Austin Palacek led the Tigers with a single, a double, and three runs batted in. Baierl had a double and three RBIs as well.
The Tigers ended the week by dropping both games of a doubleheader with Chippewa Falls. Marshfield lost game one by a score of 6-1. Logan Schreiner suffered the loss. The Tigers lost the second game 3-2. Mason Coffren took the loss. He pitched a complete game and recorded five strikeouts.
Columbus Dons baseball
The Columbus Dons’ baseball team went 1-2, May 1-4. On May 1, Columbus lost at Owen-Withee, 15-5. The Dons were led by Calvin Brown, who singled, doubled, and drove in a run. Bryce Fuerlinger and Jarred Mandel both doubled and drove in a run a piece.
On May 3, Columbus lost to Loyal, 14-1, at Hackman Field in Marshfield.
The Dons ended the week with a convincing win over Granton, 19-0. Mandel picked up the win. Nick Malovrh had four hits and three RBIs for Columbus. Fuerlinger had a single, a pair of doubles, and knocked in two runs. Ethan Meece also had two doubles and two runs batted in.
Spencer Rockets baseball
Spencer went 0-3 as April turned to May. On April 30, the Rockets lost at Pittsville, 15-3. The Panthers were led by Kody Kauth, who had two singles, a double, and five runs batted in. For Spencer, Colton Schillinger singled, doubled, and drove in a run. On May 1, the Rockets lost at Neillsville 3-2. Spencer dropped another one-run game on May 4, losing at Greenwood 5-4.
Auburndale Apaches baseball
The Auburndale baseball team went 2-2 during the week. The Apaches got shut out by Marathon on April 30, 10-0. Auburndale followed that by splitting a home-and-away series with Edgar. The Apaches won the first matchup May 1 at Edgar 7-4. Dylan Paun led Auburndale with a triple and two RBIs. Cooper Weinfurter had three base hits and a run batted in. Treyton Weister doubled and drove in a run.
On May 3, the Apaches lost at home to the Wildcats 3-2. That was followed by a 15-3 home win over Wausau Newman on May 4. Weinfurter was the winning pitcher, giving up seven hits and three earned runs, while walking two and striking out two over five innings. Ryan Isaacson had three doubles and four runs batted in. Colton Wright had two singles and five RBIs. Cam Ertl singled twice and knocked in three runs.
Columbus Catholic softball
Columbus Catholic went 1-2 in conference games May 1 and May 3. The Dons split a doubleheader with Owen-Withee, losing game one 7-3. Addison Baierl took the loss for Columbus. She walked six batters while striking out four over six innings of work. Addison added a two-run homer offensively, while Annie Baierl and Brooke Neider each had two hits for the Dons. Columbus won game two, 20-7. Ella Schultz got the win, striking out three. Annie and Addison Baierl each launched grand slam home runs, while driving in five runs apiece.
On May 3, Columbus lost to Loyal, 19-18, in eight innings. Addison Baierl pitched all eight innings, striking out eight Loyal batters. Neider and Maren Seefluth each had three hits. Annika Brown and Sophia Mauney each had two hits.
Spencer Rockets softball
Spencer had a good week. The Rockets won at Pittsville April 30, 16-2. Tiffany Meinders picked up the win. Aryiah Schuh had two doubles and two RBIs. Sadie Mercier collected two singles and four RBIs. Kayla Hopperdietzel had two base hits and knocked in three runs.
On May 1, the Rockets split a doubleheader with Neillsville. The Warriors won game one, 7-2. Lexi Baehr homered for the Rockets. Meinders took a tough loss, despite striking out a dozen Neillsville batters. Meinders shook it off to win game two, 5-4. She also had a pair of doubles and an RBI.
On May 4, the Rockets beat Greenwood for the second time this season, beating the Indians 7-3. Meinders threw all seven innings, giving up eight hits and three runs, while recording nine strikeouts. Baehr knocked in two runs, Chailey Robinson had three singles and an RBI, and Mercier had three base hits.
