The boys of summer; An update on Marshfield’s baseball pros

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield’s three professional baseball players are winding down their summer seasons.
Daulton Varsho
Varsho is catching for the Double-A Jackson Generals of the Southern League. Over a recent 10-game stretch ending Aug. 17, Varsho was batting .439, going 18-41 at the plate with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. During the surge, Varsho was named the Southern League Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 5-11 after batting .421 with two triples, two home runs, five runs batted in, and four runs scored in five games. He was recently described by MiLB.com as “an above-average athlete who can hit and run.” He is the No. 5 prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization. Varsho, 23, was batting .298 with 16 home runs and 52 RBIs as of Aug. 18.
Elliot Ashbeck
Ashbeck is pitching for the Class-A Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. In his most-recent appearance on the mound, Ashbeck was the winning pitcher in a 13-8 Lake Elsinore victory over Lancaster on August 15. Ashbeck, 25, threw two innings of relief and gave up one earned run on two hits while striking out three and walking none. Over his last 10 appearances, Elliot is 4-2 with a 3.83 ERA. In 44 innings, he’s given up 42 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 39 and walking just five. In one of his better outings this season, Ashbeck struck out 10 batters over six innings in a game against Inland Empire on June 30.
Trevor Schwecke
Schwecke, Marshfield’s newest pro, is an infielder for the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. Schwecke, 21, is batting .257 as of Aug. 17, with 47 hits, one home run, 18 runs batted in, 29 walks and 54 strikeouts. Trevor was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization on June 11 and assigned to Vancouver on June 13.
