Meet UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield Student: Erin Mews
Age: 19
Hometown: Marshfield
High school attended: Marshfield High School
Current program or major: Elementary Education
Q: Why did you choose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
E.M.: I chose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield because it was close to home. I could still live with my family, and the price was right for me.
Q: What surprised you the most when you arrived on campus?
E.M.: I was surprised how up-to-date everything was, including the computers we use. There was a new STEM building. The campus atmosphere felt like it was targeted towards my success. My professors surprised me. Not only did they teach passionately, but they gave me a lot of one-on-one time, making sure I understood the material.
Q: Why did you choose your program/major?
E.M.: I chose an elementary education as my major because education has always been important to me. I know that knowledge is power, and I want children to have that power. They are the future of our society so I want to be able to set them on the right path.
Q: What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
E.M.: I’m learning that teachers play a super important role in the lives of their students. Which is really rewarding for me. I love knowing that I can change the world for these kids.
Q: In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?
E.M.: Well, homework takes up a good portion of my time, and I enjoy doing it. I love learning! I also like hanging out with my friends, especially my InterVarsity friends. I enjoy exploring new things with my family, singing, playing piano, ukulele or violin, and watching YouTube.
Q: Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?
E.M.: I can’t just choose one favorite professor or staff member. My top three are Sandy Neumann (psychology-education), Mika Brunson (music), and Christine Klingbiel (English). They take time out of their schedules to get to know me. They want what’s best for me and have really helped me these past few years.
Q: What do you plan to do after UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
E.M.: I plan on going to UW-Steven Point in fall 2019 to continue pursuing my degree.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for incoming students?
E.M.: Get involved in non-course activities. My first year of college, I didn’t want to do anything, but then my friend invited me to InterVarsity. That was one of the best decisions of my life. I am now president of InterVarsity, serve as a student ambassador and as vice president of Internal Affairs for Student Senate. When you get involved on campus, doors open for new learning and leadership opportunities that you would never have expected.
