Pittsville hosts junior high math competition

PITTSVILLE – On May 4, Pittsville Elementary School hosted the Junior High Math Competition for students in sixth to eighth grades. This is the third year Pittsville Elementary School has hosted the competition.

Three teams of four students each participated from Pittsville. The contest contains five tests which include: fractions, algebra, geometry, problem solving, and a team event. Thirteen different schools brought a total of 29 teams comprised of the top 116 math students to compete.

The 12 students who represented Pittsville Elementary School were: eighth graders: Ruth Durrant, Gage Kumm, Emma Tolzmann, and Kristin Zdun; seventh graders: Natalie Fuller, Maddy Hensel, Avery Vanatta, and Trace Wilke; and sixth graders: Kadin Fox, Derek Grossman, Brad Neve and Lillian Opie.

The Pittsville Purple ​team finished ninth out of 29 teams; the Pittsville Gold team tied for 13th; and the Pittsville White team placed 27th.

Trace Wilke earned sixth place, individually, and Kadin Fox and Ruth Durrant were each members of a mixed team that finished in the top four spots.
