Letter to the editor: Reader opposes downtown community square

Dear editor,
The latest article in the Jan. 16, 2016, edition indicates a favorable online response to the proposed community square. However, that is only 183 people who fostered an opinion.
There were several issues raised in the responses submitted, such as maintaining the city streets should be the first priority, parking for the post office and Chestnut Center is already a problem, and a specific green space occupied by the former News-Herald parking lot is worthy of consideration.
Mr. Phil Shealy’s letter hit on every point about utilizing empty buildings, parking elimination, removal of tax-based commercial property, and addressing all the parks we currently have that are not exploited to their capacity.
It appears there is a “build it and they will come attitude” in this city at a price of $1.3 million.
