Wausau Newman Catholic edges Auburndale in battle of Marawood South volleyball leaders

AUBURNDALE – Wausau Newman Catholic stormed back from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Auburndale 3-2 in a battle of the last two Marawood Conference South Division undefeated volleyball teams on Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.

The Cardinals won 23-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16, 15-8, to improve to 3-0 in the conference. Auburndale is now 2-1.

Setter Sydney Schmutzer had 35 assists and three players reached double figures in kills for the Apaches – Shannon Yahnke with 15, Jenna Peplinski with 11 and Taylor Gotz with 10.

Hannah Castellano had 20 digs, Cheyenne Karl had 16 and Peplinski added 15 for the Apaches.

Auburndale will play a nonconference match at Rib Lake on Thursday and compete in the Berlin Invitational on Saturday.
