MARSHFIELD — Kim James’ Spanish IV class recently collected food for Marshfield Area United Way’s Nutrition On Weekends program.

“It’s for kids who don’t have food over the weekend within our school district and other school districts,” said James, a Spanish teacher at Marshfield High School. “(The program is) serving over 300 people, so we thought this would be a good way to help out this organization.”

The food drive was held in conjunction with a unit in Spanish IV on volunteering. The students wanted to do something that would benefit the community and support the United Way.

“The students designed posters that they put up around school (written) in Spanish and English. They decorated the donation boxes and made food lists written in Spanish and English. They also made announcements throughout the week in the morning at the high school asking teachers, students, anyone to donate food for this program,” said James.

By the end of the food drive on Oct. 18, the class had collected approximately 75 items.
