MARSHFIELD – Royal Tokyo is marking its 25th anniversary since opening its doors to the public.
Royal Tokyo is a hibachi-style restaurant owned and operated by three partners. Kiew Law and Eddie Hwang opened the business in 2001, and Rose Chuang joined them in 2016.
The three owners manage the restaurant’s daily operations.
Law said the decision to open the restaurant was based on a lack of dining options in Marshfield at the time — particularly hibachi-style restaurants.
They believed the concept would be a strong addition to the community.
The building was owned at the time by local architect Lyman Smith.
While searching for a location, Law and Hwang met with Smith, who showed them the building.
They chose the site and worked to preserve its historic character while making necessary renovations.
The owners operate the business but do not own the building.
It is now owned by Hub City Real Estate Holdings LLC, which plans to keep the restaurant in the space as long as it remains in operation.
When asked what has contributed to the restaurant’s longevity, Law credited Chuang.
Law and Hwang said Chuang oversees operations and manages the business.
“It’s also been maintained because of the support from the Marshfield community and the quality of the food,” stated Law.
The restaurant is frequently used for celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries.
“Some businesses will take their clients here for dinner,” Law stated.
Over the past 25 years, the menu has remained largely unchanged, with sushi being the only major addition.
The owners said they do not plan to retire in the near future.
However, they do not intend to pass the business down and plan to close when they decide to step away.
Law said they will continue operating as long as Chuang remains involved.
“When Rose quits, we quit,” stated Law.
Royal Tokyo is open from 4:30-9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and is located at 112 E. First Street in Marshfield, the former Wisconsin Central/Soo Line Depot.
