Rockets football earns first season win

SPENCER – The Spencer/Columbus Rockets picked up their first win of the high school football season, by knocking off Fall Creek 55-0 on Sept. 6 at Ted Fritsch Field in Spencer.

The Rockets put up 49 points in the first half, and tacked on another score in the fourth quarter.

Austin Bacon scored on a 51-yard touchdown run in the first minute of the game, and also ran in the two-point conversion. Bacon added touchdown runs of one yard and 12 yards in the second quarter that added to a big night. Bacon ran the ball nine times for 163 yards and three scores.

Eden Jacobson also ran for three scores, including a 60-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. Jacobson racked up 135 rush yards on nine carries. Bacon averaged 18.1 yards on his nine carries, while Jacobson averaged 15 yards per run. Bacon also caught a TD pass from quarterback Gage Stratman, who was 4-for-5 for 67 yards and one TD.

Will Gorst added a fourth-quarter touchdown run of 18 yards. Gorst had five rushing attempts for 36 yards and one score. Ty Woodkey added three carries for 19 yards, while Max McGiveron had three rushes for 17 yards.

The Spencer/Columbus defense intercepted Fall Creek quarterback Brock Laube three times. Brett Kasch and Chase Higgins had two of those picks. Stratman had the other. The Rockets outgained the Crickets 494-100, despite running six fewer plays and possessing the ball for seven fewer minutes.

The Rockets are now 1-2 and play at Stanley-Boyd on Sept. 13 prior to hosting Neillsville/Granton on Sept. 20 and Colby on Sept. 27.
