MARSHFIELD — Marshfield Utilities has received approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to increase water rates. Marshfield Utilities requested an increase in rates using the Simplified Rate Case process. Public fire protection and general service rates will increase 3 percent, effective July 1, 2015. For a residential customer with usage of 500 cubic feet (3,740 gallons) per month, the monthly charge would increase from $21.70 to $22.36. Rate increases for Simplified Rate Cases do not require a public hearing. The rates were last raised in 2014 by 3 percent.
Marshfield Utilities will also be filing a full rate case this summer to increase water rates later in the year. The full rate case will incorporate additional investments that have been made in the water utility. These investments include the purchase of new water meters, a new water tower, replacement of a forced draft aerator at the water treatment facility, a new well, and replacing and lining water mains that are approaching 100 years of age. Aging infrastructure needs to be continually updated and replaced to ensure that the system remains reliable.
