Lisa is a 19-year-old student from Chengdu, China, where she attended Chengdu Railway School.
Lisa is majoring in accounting and says she chose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield because she needed to "take language classes during my first semester so I can have a chance to be part of the Badger Promise Program at UW-Madison next year."
Though she took a college entrance examination in China, she wanted to go abroad for college to "have better academic resources and environment."
After receiving her education on the Marshfield campus, Lisa plans to transfer to UW-Madison to continue her studies and take the CPA test after two years there.
What surprised you the most about UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield when you arrived on campus?
I was surprised by the friendliness of the people. I think people around our campus are so nice. For example, classmates helped me understand class information. Professors are always so patient when I ask questions; they help me a lot in life.
Why did you choose your program/major?
Because I am good at mathematics, and I am interested in economy. Accounting is very useful and helpful during our life, and it is easy to get a job if you have passed the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) test.
What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
I find learning to balance our assets (money) by time is interesting because our money is growing every day, but it depends on where we put them. If we put them into our wallet, it probably won’t grow. However, if we put them into the bank or investment, it has a big chance to increase its value by time.
In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?
Being a college student is very busy during the week. As for me, I like listening to music and drawing on weekends to have a rest. I also like reading books and playing the piano.
Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?
Lucy Ruder and Laura Lee. Lucy was my language instructor last semester. She helped me modify my essays and also helped a lot for international students in life. For example, she always give us a ride to bank or Walmart when the taxi doesn’t come. Dr. Lee is my biology professor, and she is so nice and patient to answer my questions. I was not good at biology, but after studying with her, I am good at biology now.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield students?
Don’t be afraid of trying new things! College life needs to be filled up with different experiences, providing meaningful memories for you when you get older.
