Marshfield's 2017 growing season second wettest on record

MARSHFIELD — According to University of Wisconsin-Extension Agronomist Joe Lauer, the period between Jan. 1 and July 4 was close to setting new records for excessive moisture conditions.

Lauer told Wisconsin Ag Connection he looked at data recorded at the UW’s Marshfield Agricultural Research Station and found that the 2017 growing season was the second wettest to date over the last century. So far this year, 24.6 inches of precipitation had been measured through July 4.

The wettest year came in 1973, when 25.8 inches were measured leading up to July 4. In 1942 23.8 inches were recorded, and 1993 was the fourth wettest at 22.3 inches.

Stations in Marshfield and Arlington are used by the UW-Extension to track the state’s average weather patterns.
