MARSHFIELD – During its Oct. 21 meeting, the Marshfield Plan Commission unanimously approved a request by the Historic Preservation Commision (HPC) to grant a former Marshfield church structure historic designation.
“The Historic Preservation Commission has submitted an application requesting local historic designation for the property located at 312 E. Ninth Street, formerly known as the Zion United Methodist Church and currently occupied by the Pipe Organ Museum and owned by Michael Kennelly,” explained Marshfield City Planner James Lieven.
“The building was constructed in 1925 and designed by Gustave A. Krasin, a Marshfield-based architect active in the early twentieth century. The structure is an example of Late Gothic Revival architecture, featuring a gable roof, pointed-arch windows and brick masonry consistent with the architectural period.”
Lieven said that the commission’s nomination materials identify the following elements of significance: the building’s representation of a distinct architectural style and period; the building’s association with Gustave A. Krasin, a noted local architect in the early 1900s; and its historic function as a community gathering space.
Its architectural significance includes the fact that the building is a “well-preserved example of Late Gothic Revival architecture” featuring pointed arches, stained glass windows and a gable roof.
Its historical significance is due to the fact that the church hosted numerous community events, religious services and civic gatherings, “contributing to Marshfield’s social and cultural history.”
The property also retains its original architectural features and “continues to serve as a community landmark.”
“Upon designation, any exterior alterations to the property will require review and approval by the Historic Preservation Commission and Plan Commission, as outlined in the zoning ordinance. Interior changes are not subject to commission review,” Lieven added.
After designation, the property could become eligible for historic tax credits through the state.
The request passed Plan Commission by a vote of 7-0.
