25 YEARS AGO: Seventeen endangered massasauga rattlesnakes were released into the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge on Monday to see if they can survive in the wild. The massasauga is one of two venomous rattlesnakes native to Wisconsin but is vanishing, partly due to bounties and wetland destruction. | Now in its second year, Marshfield’s space camp continues to ignite curiosity in young students. Part of the school district’s summer program, the three-week camp for grades 4–6 explored flight, Mars, and space travel through hands-on activities like building space stations, designing Mars landscapes, and controlling rovers. Students also created their own space hats—many with help from parents. “We hope this sparks a lasting interest in space,” said teacher Judy Shookman. “You never know where it might lead.”
50 YEARS AGO: Two area men will be among 88 members of National Guard and military reserve units in Wisconsin to be honored by the Milwaukee Journal in ceremonies at WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee Saturday. They are Cpl. Michael V. Schueller of Edgar and Sgt. Dan R. Liske of Route 3, Medford. | City Engineer Richard Schneider said today the Upham Street paving project has received final authorization from Governor Patrick Lucey. The street will be closed to traffic Monday and work is expected to begin the same day.
75 YEARS AGO: The number of grocery stores in Marshfield increased to 27 today with the opening of the Schelb Grocery Store at 401 N. Hinman avenue. | A total of 5,239 persons, including 3,882 men and 1,417 women are employed in Marshfield according to the annual labor survey completed today by the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce.
100 YEARS AGO: Manager Adler announced that he had secured a return engagement of the famous picture, “The Ten Commandments,” for a showing at the Adler sometime early in the fall with prices more attractive than those of its first appearance here when the admission was $1.50, $1,00 and 50 cents. The prices for the coming show will be 50 and 25 cents. | The pocket billiard tournament held at the Brunswick parlors last night resulted in the following winners: Andy Wagner, first; R. Holly, second; J Regenfuss Jr., third.
