MARSHFIELD – Marshfield senior Mitch Hertel wrapped up his stellar conference career with his third conference title, winning the championship at 160 pounds on Saturday at the 2015 Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament at Marshfield High School.
Hertel pinned Joey Roth of Stevens Point in 1:15 to capture his third WVC individual title and improve to 19-0 this season. Hertel won the 132-pound title as a freshman and the 152-pound championship last season.
Hertel’s title was the one of two for Marshfield, which finished third in the team standings with 139.5 points after finishing in a tie for fifth during the dual-meet season.
Sophomore Anthony Kanable won the championship at 126 for the Tigers, defeating Max Benitz of Wisconsin Rapids 5-1 in the title match. Kanable was second at 120 pounds at last year’s WVC Tournament.
Wisconsin Rapids won five individual championships to take the team title with 239 points. Stevens Point was second with 193.5 points. The title is Wisconsin Rapids 18th in the last 21 seasons, and first since 2012.
Josh Lang was runner-up at 195 for Marshfield, losing a tight 7-6 decision to Cody Abel of Wisconsin Rapids in the championship match.
Devon Klement took third at 145 pounds and Jeremy Brost was fourth at 152 for the Tigers.
All of the teams in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, except Wisconsin Rapids, as well as Antigo and Rhinelander will compete in the WIAA Division 1 regional at Marshfield next Saturday, Feb. 14. The tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. The top four finishers in each weight class move on to the WIAA Division 1 individual sectional at Eau Claire North on Feb. 21. The winning team will advance to the WIAA Division 1 team sectional at Menomonie on Feb. 17.
