MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MACCI) has recognized Wildwood Animal Hospital and Clinic, LLC as the 2015 Small Business of the Year.

The award recognizes businesses that have demonstrated a host of accomplishments including growth, employment, and community service.

According to owner Dr. Roger Krogstad, three things came together for the clinic to receive this award: passion, community, and coworkers.

“The compassion of the staff, we’ve provided our own emergency service for 16 years. People appreciate that we are there when they need us,” said Krogstad when asked what makes his clinic unique.

Wildwood will often place a follow-up call to a pet owner the day after an appointment to see how the animal is doing. Wildwood also sends sympathy cards to pet owners any time an animal has to be euthanized.

Wildwood, which employs 10 staff members, was purchased by Krogstad in 1981 and is a member of MACCI, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

According to office manager Terri Lenz, being a member of the AAHA requires the clinic to meet and maintain a set of rigorous standards. The clinic is inspected every three years to ensure that it meets the standards of the AAHA. According to Lenz, who has been with the clinic since 1979, being a member of the AAHA is good for pets because it promotes the best practices and quality care. Wildwood has been a member of the AAHA since 1980.

“Roger always answers my questions and takes time to listen. The staff is also very accommodating,” said Karmen Gorman, a Marshfield resident and teacher at Marshfield Middle School. Gorman has a 4-year-old cat named Quincy that she takes to Wildwood for veterinary services.

Gorman added, “We’ve known Roger for 10 years. He’s just great. Roger is just a very caring individual. He’s a caring and compassionate person and really looks out for all of his customers.”

Wildwood is also heavily involved in the community. The business donates to the Children’s Miracle Network while Krogstad is a member of Kiwanis and supports the work of Marshfield Area Pet Shelter.

“I’m proud to be a part of it because it’s important to us to help lost or stray animals get health care and find a good home,” said Krogstad.

When asked what the most common services provided are, Lenz said, “Exams and illness, but what we want to do is help with prevention.”

February is Pet Dental Health Month, which is promoted by the AVMA. Pet dental health is a main focus for Wildwood.

“Dental health is very important for pets. Their teeth should be cleaned every six to 12 months. Pets’ mouths need to be taken care of just like ours,” said Krogstad.

Lenz invites those that have not visited Wildwood to stop in for a visit.

“Come visit and introduce yourself. Meet the staff and see the facility. You will find that we are compassionate and caring and will provide what you need.”
