MARSHFIELD — Paws for Brittany is an event enjoyed by many supporting a cause that attendees cherish. However, all would prefer the annual fun run and dog walk never existed.
That is because the impetus for the event is the 2008 murder of Marshfield native Brittany Zimmermann, who was killed in Madison. From that tragedy, Paws for Brittany was born and supports Zimmermann’s love of animals by raising money for Marshfield Area Pet Shelter (MAPS), which cares for the city’s stray animal population.
On May 7 210 adults and an abundance of dogs and children turned out for the event held at Wildwood Park. Paws for Brittany-themed T-shirts, bandanas, and tote bags were sold, and, according to MAPS president Karen Rau, about $9,000 total was raised. MAPS has a temporary shelter at the former airport terminal building at the Marshfield Municipal Airport but hopes to raise enough money to build a permanent facility.
Brittany’s mother, Jean, spoke with Hub City Times at the event.
“We could not be prouder to be part of (the event). Brittany was a huge animal lover. We have her three cats, and she definitely would’ve loved to have been part of this,” Jean said.
Brittany was engaged to Jordan Gonnering at the time of her death, and Jean said that the Zimmermanns and Gonnerings still spend time together.
