Fly-in fundraiser to support Discovery Education Station expansion

Posted

MARSHFIELD – Discovery Education Station will host the Skybound Family Festival on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marshfield Municipal Airport, 326 W. 29th St., Marshfield.

The event will feature a fly-in continental breakfast served throughout the day.

The annual fundraiser benefits Discovery Education Station and its mission of providing inclusive educational opportunities for children, teens and adults with disabilities, as well as their families throughout central Wisconsin.

"Funds from this year's event will help support our current programs, including after-school programming, respite care, community outreach outings, life skills development, STEM activities, adaptive learning resources and educational supplies that make our programs engaging and accessible for participants of all abilities," said Linda Roehrborn, executive director of Discovery Education Station.

Funds raised will also support the organization's $1.5 million capital campaign, “Discovery Move: An Inclusive Future,” which will allow Discovery Education Station to expand into a larger facility.

"This will allow us to serve more families and create two new destinations, including Discovery X, an immersive hands-on learning center featuring interactive STEAM experiences, and Discovery Harbor, an inclusive space focused on life skills, sensory experiences, adult day services, parent resources and community support for special needs clients," Roehrborn said.

"By attending the festival, sponsoring an activity or making a donation, community members aren't just supporting a single event—they're helping build opportunities that will inspire curiosity, foster independence, strengthen families and serve our community for years to come," Roehrborn said.

The festival will feature live aircraft and helicopter displays, drone demonstrations, RC aircraft flying, ham radio communications, a hot air balloon display, science exhibits, model rocket launches, bounce houses, local vendors, family-focused businesses and hands-on STEM activities.

Additional attractions include a petting zoo featuring snakes, chinchillas and farm animals, a mining sluice, Stuff-a-Stuffy, Santa's Summer Toy Workshop, a scavenger hunt and the all-day continental breakfast.

"This is an annual fundraiser that will run all day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families are welcome to come for the entire day or stop by whenever it fits their schedule," Roehrborn said.

"Our goal is to create an inclusive, welcoming event where people of all ages and abilities can learn, have fun and spend quality time together while supporting Discovery Education Station's mission.”

Contributors to this year's event include Marshfield Municipal Airport, Reis Martial Arts Academy, Central Wisconsin Country Store and Allied Cooperative.
