Ewert resigns as Marshfield Clinic Executive Director

MARSHFIELD— Dr. Brian Ewert submitted his letter of resignation as Marshfield Clinic Executive Director on Friday, ending a six year period in which he oversaw the operations of the Clinic.

Ewert’s last day in office will be Sept. 12, but he will continue to help with the transition to new leadership into October, according to the chair of the Clinic’s board of directors, Dr. Narayana Murali.

Murali said that Ewert’s decision to step down has been discussed among Clinic leadership “for some time now,” and did not come as a surprise to him.

Murali characterized the transition as a handoff between Ewert and Marshfield Clinic Health System CEO, Dr. Susan Turney.

“It’s like a relay race.  He’s handing on the baton to Susan, when she comes on September first. He will be there until she has enough time to catch up on all the information,” Murali said.

Turney will not fill Ewert’s same position however, and his replacement will be selected via an election process.   Ewert’s replacement must be a “Class A” physician of the Marshfield Clinic, meaning one who has been with the organization for at least two years.

The Clinic board will announce a date for the election at a future time, Murali said.

Ewert will likely have the option to return to his role as a physician though it is Clinic policy that he is not guaranteed a position, Murali said.

“For somebody of his stature, the likelihood that we would say that we don’t have a position for you is close to zero. He is a phenomenal clinician.”

Ewert’s area of practice is Nephrology.
