MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic senior Sean McCarthy said he likes where the Dons soccer team is as it heads into the second half of the Mid-State Soccer Conference season.

Columbus Catholic entered the week tied with Stevens Point Pacelli for the conference lead and wrapped up its first half of the Mid-State schedule with a 6-0 rout of Northland Lutheran on Monday.

McCarthy had three goals in the win, the fourth time this season he has netted a hat trick for the Dons, who owned a 7-2-2 record heading into Thursday’s game against McDonell/Regis.

Hub City Times recently talked with McCarthy about the Dons’ season.

Hub City Times: You guys have been putting up a lot of goals and playing great defense. What’s been clicking for you this season?

Sean McCarthy: I think center-mids (midfielders) have been playing very well as a team and our forwards have been opening up the field. We are spread wide and everyone’s spread out over the whole field.

HCT: You have some tough competition coming up with the second round through the conference coming up. What are you going to have to do to beat Pacelli and McDonell/Regis?

SM: Play like we did (Monday). We have to keep the ball moving, quick passes, don’t play around with it too long and get it to their feet and in front of them if they’re making a run.

HCT: Do you feel you have a legitimate shot at winning conference and making a deep run in the playoffs?

SM: I think we can win the conference if we play at the high level that we can. We do play at that level on a pretty regular basis.
