WAUSAU — The Auburndale girls basketball team kept pace on top of the Marawood Conference South Division with a 49-44 victory at Newman Catholic on Thursday night.

The Apaches improve to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the Marawood South and remain in a tie for first place in the conference with Marathon. Marathon won at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, which was also in a first-place tie in the South Division, 54-47 on Thursday.

The victory was Auburndale’s third this year over Newman Catholic (5-8, 2-5 Marawood South), which includes a pair of conference games and a matchup at the Marshfield Girls Basketball Tournament on Jan. 2.

Auburndale now has a week of rest before returning to action on Jan. 23 at home against Stratford.
