Auburndale football falls to Edgar

AUBURNDALE – After racking up over 900 yards of offense in the first two weeks of the high school football season, the Auburndale Apaches suffered a major drought in week three.

The Apaches mustered only 20 total yards of offense in a 27-0 loss to the Edgar Wildcats Sept. 6 at Auburndale High School.

Kyle Peterson carried the ball 12 times for 13 yards, after putting up 265 yards on 43 carries in the first two weeks of the season. Dylan Paun did have five catches for 29 yards, but negative yardage in the running game – including sacks of quarterback Cooper Weinfurter – wiping out much of those offensive gains.

Weinfurter was 7-for-26 for 42 yards and two interceptions, after throwing for 343 yards and two touchdowns in wins over Pittsville and Blair-Taylor in weeks one and two. Auburndale's longest play from scrimmage was a 15-yard pass to Paun.

The Wildcats won the game, despite turning the ball over five times. Auburndale could not take advantage of the extra possessions. The Apaches had 14 possessions, and went three-and-out on nine of those.

The win by Edgar was the 16th straight by the Wildcats over the Apaches dating back to 2004. The victory was also the 15th shutout win by Edgar over Auburndale since 1969.

Edgar now leads the overall series 23-12. The 2-1 Auburndale Apaches are at Tomahawk on Sept. 13, followed by a visit to Marathon Sept. 20. The Apaches are back at home against Stratford on Sept. 27.
