AUBURNDALE — The Auburndale boys basketball team needed a big run to save itself from a home loss.
The Apaches outscored Pittsville 13-2 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 39-31 victory in a Marawood Conference South Division game Thursday night at Auburndale High School.
Pittsville led 19-17 at halftime and 29-26 after three quarters before the Apaches held the Panthers to just one basket in the final 8 minutes.
Matt Nikolay had 17 points, nine rebounds, and six steals for Auburndale (11-5, 6-3 Marawood South).
Auburndale made just nine field goals but was 18 of 21 on free throws while Pittsville was just 3 of 4.
Matthew Carlson topped Pittsville (6-11, 3-7 Marawood South) with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Auburndale plays at first-place and undefeated Marathon on Tuesday.
