WOOD COUNTY — A Marshfield man is charged with two counts of second degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age.
Matthew Reigel, 18, made his initial appearance in Wood County Circuit Court on Monday after being charged with the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl. For the charge, a class C felony, he faces up to 40 years imprisonment, a $100,000 fine, or both.
According to court documents, on April 13 a Marshfield police officer spoke with the victim regarding allegations of Reigel’s sexual assault. She said on April 3 she and a friend were picked up from their home at about 5:30 p.m. by Reigel and two other males, who drove them to his apartment on West Veterans Parkway in Marshfield.
According to the victim’s mother, she was supposed to have stayed at her friend’s house on the evening of the assault.
The victim told police that Reigel was flirting with her and saying he liked her. He began kissing her and asking her to do stuff, which she took to mean having sex. She told him no. When questioned, Reigel admitted to having sexual intercourse with the victim but said he believed she was 18 years old.
Reigel is currently free on a $10,000 signature bond and is to have no contact with the victim.
His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
