MARSHFIELD – Phase One of the Marshfield Clinic Health System YMCA renovation is complete, as the doors to the Everett & Delores Roehl Youth Center opened to the public Sept. 1.
The opening was marked by a ribbon-cutting hosted by the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Sept. 25.
The new Youth Center will serve as an umbrella facility for Pied Piper Pre-School, Wood County Head Start, Youth Net, and the Marshfield High School Alternative School.
It is also home to “Jeremy’s Kids Zone,” named in honor of Jeremy Meissner, who battled alcohol addiction and depression.
“Depression and addiction are mental illness and it’s a disease that can invade the youth of our community,” said Jeremy’s father, Dave. “We must do more, and we can. We’ve now built the walls, but now the work begins. Together, we can prevent mental illness by raising the self-worth of our youth – one child at a time.”
Construction on the building now moves to Phase Two, with the completion of the Healthy Living Center and the Everett and Delores Roehl Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse will include three full size basketball courts and will be a multi-sports complex.
Completion of Phase Two will allow for expanded offerings in the city.
“We can do tournaments here in town, so we can bring some revenue into the community, restaurants, hotels, and all around,” said YMCA Marketing and Development Director Rochelle Hill. “You’ve got indoor soccer; you’ve got volleyball; of course, basketball tournaments – it’ll be nice to bring that into Marshfield.”
The Healthy Living Center will offer 24/7 access, with wellness consultation and fitness testing rooms, as well as increased equipment offerings.
Hill said that the opening of the Healthy Living and Fieldhouse portion is planned for April 2019.
