Marshfield Police introduce new K9
By Kris Leonhardt
MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Police Department has welcomed a new member to its organization – Jenny – the newest K9 member of the force.
Jenny was selected by her new handler Officer Sam Fox, a longtime member of the department. She comes from Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana, where all of Marshfield’s K9 officers have been obtained.
“Sam is a 13-year veteran of our department who has shown an interest in becoming a K9 handler for quite some time,” said Lieutenant Jody Geurink. “He brings years of experience as a SRT assistant team leader, several instructor positions, and as a field training officer. In addition, he and his family are ‘dog friendly.’ They have owned several dogs over the years, which is important since the job of a handler doesn’t stop when his shift ends. I’m excited to see Sam take the reins into his more than capable hands.”
Fox is currently completing seven weeks of training with Jenny in Indiana.
Jenny will replace K9 ‘H’ upon her and Sam’s return from school,” Geurink said. “’H’ is approaching 10 years old and has been with our department since 2011. His handler, Terry Endries has been an extremely dedicated member of the K9 team and will surely be missed in the program as he branches out into other areas of the department that would be difficult to do as a handler.”
Geurink said that there are no specific plans to introduce Jenny to the public, other than through social media, and that she will appear at events as the team progresses through the years.
“It’s important to remember that she is a working dog and needs to be integrated into social situations at her pace,” he said. “Sam will become more and more involved in presentations in the future.”
