MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals keep winning. Hub City’s amateur baseball team picked up its tenth straight win on July 8, defeating the Spirit Twins 13-3 in seven innings. The Chaparrals are now 12-1 on the season, and they’ve outscored their opponents 108-31.
The Chaps took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, and added five more runs in the third inning. That scoring spurt included a two-run home run by Noah Panzer. Spirit scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Marshfield came right back with three more runs in the fifth. The Twins added a run in the bottom of that inning, but that was it for the day. Marshfield added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Riley Erickson, then held Spirit scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to end the game in seven innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
The win goes to Ryan Metz. He scattered ten hits over six innings, allowing just two earned runs while walking two and striking out two.
Bobby Pilz struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning, as the Chaps wrapped up their 12th win.
Erickson went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Kyle Westhuis went 3-for-5 and Panzer went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
