MARSHFIELD – Another anchor tenant at the Marshfield Mall could be closing. Bon-Ton – the parent company of Younkers – could be closing nine Boston Stores, three Younkers stores, and its corporate office in Wisconsin.
Stores will close in Madison and Janesville. The Younkers stores in Marshfield, Eau Claire, and Green Bay could also close.
The corporation is required to give employees and the state a notice of 60 days if there is a potential for a mass layoff. The state workforce development department was notified this week of the potential closing.
Bon Ton Public relations vice-president Christine Hojnacki released a statement that says “Bon-Ton is in active discussions with an investor group to acquire the company in a court-supervised sale process. We’re encouraged by the interest in Bon-Ton, and we hope that jobs will be preserved through a sale process. We remain committed to pursuing the best path forward for the company and its stakeholders, including Bon-Ton associates”.
More than 2,200 could lose their jobs. According to a press release, 71 Marshfield employees will start being laid off in June and 11 other Wisconsin stores are on the list, with the Wausau location already in the process of closing.
Bon-Ton, the parent company of Younkers, announced in February that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The Marshfield JC Penney store, another mall anchor, announced their closing in March 2017.
