Local wrestling champions crowned: Stratford’s Schoenherr takes fourth title

MARSHFIELD – Central Wisconsin produced four state champions at the 75th Annual WIAA Individual State Tournament Feb. 22-24 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The tournament produced a pair of four-time champions, including one from central Wisconsin. Jeremy Schoenherr, Stratford, and Sam Stuhl, Ellsworth, each became members of a select group of 16 State four-time champions.
Schoenherr remained undefeated at 36-0 with a 13-5 major decision in the 138-pound title bout in Division III. Schoenherr earns his place in WIAA history as the 15th wrestler to earn four state titles during their high school career. He won the 113-pound championship in 2015, the 126-pound title in 2016, and the crown at 138 last year.
A.J. Schoenfuss, Stratford, came up short of his bid to become a four-time champion. Jordan Boldt of Bonduel outlasted Schoenfuss in his title match in Division 3 with a 4-3 decision in the ultimate tie-breaker.
Also in Division III and wrestling at 106, Ryan Anderson of Clear Lake defeated Manny Drexler of Stratford, who ends his season 42-4. At 120, Max Schwabe of Stratford took third, by defeating Javyn Freeman of Phillips by decision 12-7. At 145, Stratford’s Jake Drexler defeated Weston Wichman of Johnson Creek by pin. At 170, Ryan Neu from Dodgeland remained unbeaten by defeating Trevor Dennee from Stratford. At 195,Jacob Giese of Bonduel beat Aiden Hoffman of Stratford. At 220, Dylan Schoenherr of Stratford defeated Justin Chadwick of Marshall by pin.
In Division II, Hunter Luepke of Spencer/Columbus Catholic added to the 195-pound title he won last year by winning at 220 this year with a record of 49-0. Also in Division II wrestling at 285, Logan Zschernitz of Spencer/Columbus defeated Dan Ausloos of Oconto Falls by pin, to end his season at 43-2, and Stephen Buchanan, Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal, defeated Jacob Heyroth of Lodi by major decision.
In Division I, Marshfield’s Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann finished in fourth place at 170, and Sam Mitchell finished in fifth place at 182.
There were 38 different wrestling programs to win State titles, with Coleman, Boyceville, Iowa-Grant, and Spencer/Columbus Catholic winning two individual championships.
The State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held March 2-3 at the UW Field House in Madison.
