PITTSVILLE — Approximately a dozen Pittsville area homes were flooded and other property damaged when overnight rainfall during the evening of Feb. 20 caused the Yellow River to rise quickly, creating ice jams.
According to local officials, the area south of Pittsville is prone to flooding but typically not until April.
The unexpected February thawing caught local residents unaware as the river reached over a foot above flood level on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 21. Flood level is measured at 13 feet. The river had reached 14.6 feet by 7 a.m. Tuesday.
