MARSHFIELD — On Dec. 9, 1890, Mother Frances Streitel and six sisters arrived in Marshfield and set up a temporary hospital and convent in a rented house on Central Avenue.
Throughout the past year, Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital has been celebrating this milestone, and on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, the celebration culminated with a blessing of a newly installed statue of St. Joseph inside the main entrance of the hospital.
The statue was a gift from the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, founders of Ministry Saint Joseph’s and Ministry Health Care, in recognition of the hospital’s 125th Anniversary. It is a reproduction of a statue made in the 1930s.
“The statue shows St. Joseph the worker instructing the Christ child in the carpenter shop,” said Sister Lois Bush, senior advisor to the president and chief executive officer of Ministry Health Care and representative of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother Leadership Team. “It has great significance as it represents the work of the many associates, volunteers, and clinicians who have contributed to the legacy of care at Ministry Saint Joseph’s over the past 125 years.”
The handmade statue is composed of industrial-grade fiberglass.
“This new statue has been given a place of honor in our facility so that all who enter may appreciate this wonderful gift,” said Brian Kief, Ministry Saint Joseph’s president. “We are proud to carry on the tradition of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother and are grateful for the donation of this statue, which will help us celebrate their legacy each and every day.”
