MHS student killed en route to school

MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield High School community is mourning the loss of one of its students.
Sophia Smrz, 17, of Junction City, was on her way to school for swim practice early Friday morning, when she was killed in a car accident. She was in her senior year.
At 5:44 a.m., the Wood County Dispatch Center received notification of a traffic crash in the Town of Auburndale near the intersection of County Highway Y and Shady Road. Two vehicles collided at the intersection, coming to rest off of the roadway, according to a press release from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department. A vehicle driven by Jason Peterson, 46, of Arpin, was traveling north on Shady Road, while the other vehicle, driven by Smrz, was going west on County Highway Y.
Smrz was pronounced dead at the scene. Peterson was transported to Marshfield Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
Agencies assisting the Wood County Sheriff’s Department were the Wisconsin State Patrol, Auburndale Fire and First Responders, Marshfield Ambulance, and the Wood County Coroner’s Office.
