Mitchell tuning up for junior season

MARSHFIELD — Former Marshfield Tiger wrestler Sam Mitchell is busy this off-season.
Sam competed April 27-29 at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, finishing in sixth place in the 97 kg class. He now qualifies for the USA team trials, which begin on May 20 in Colorado Springs.
In his opening U.S. Open match April 27, Mitchell beat Ben Kueter of Iowa.
On April 28, Mitchell lost to J’den Cox, a two-time World Champion and three-time NCAA Champion from Columbia, Missouri. Also on day two, Mitchell was defeated by Silas Allred, a 2023 Big Ten champion out of the University of Nebraska.
On his final day of competition April 29, Mitchell lost to Morgan Smith, a full-time freestyle wrestler for the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club.
Sam won the WIAA Division I wrestling championship at 195 for Marshfield in 2019. He was 21-8 for the wrestling team at the University of Buffalo this season, and will be a redshirt junior at Buffalo this fall.
