Why did you choose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?

When choosing where I wanted to go to college, my first thought was UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield. Since I grew up in Marshfield, it was very convenient. I was able to stay home and save money while receiving a quality education. This is one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

What surprised you the most about the university when you arrived on campus?

One important feature is the class size. There are about 17-20 students in a class, which is small compared to other campuses. I was very happy to see that because you receive that one-on-one teacher to student time.

How or when did you discover your purpose? How did UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield faculty/staff help?

I first came to the campus for a Viewpoint Day to learn about the campus, get a tour from some of the student ambassadors and meet some of the students and staff. I got to talk with some of the staff and they made me feel so comfortable. I felt at home. That day I was so welcomed, and I knew that this was the place I was going to continue my education.

Why did you choose your program/major?

I hope to be an event planner because I am a very organized person and like to plan things. At first, I was not sure what I wanted to study. After looking through the majors and minors at UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield, I realized a major in communications is the best choice for me. The great thing about this campus is if you don’t know what you want to major in, you can be undecided. Plus, if you have any questions, you can always talk to the academic advisor, and they can direct you to classes you are interested in.

Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?

I have a two-way tie – Ashley Masephol and Michelle Boernke. They have made my transition from high school to college successful. I know that if I have any issues or problems, I can talk to them about the situation.

In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?

Besides going to classes, I am fairly involved at the campus. I am a student ambassador, the social media intern and part of the Student Senate. I enjoy being involved on campus because I think that just going to classes and going home does not portray the college experience. Plus, it is nice for people on campus to know who you are and be able to help anyone if needed. The campus has areas where you can sit and talk while doing your homework. This gives us all time to get to know each other and make friendships along the way.

What do you plan to do after attending UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?

I plan to continue my education at the main UWSP campus in Stevens Point. When I transfer there, I still hope to be involved and make new friends along the way. I hope to graduate with a communications major and continue my next chapter.

To make the most of their college experience, what advice do you have for incoming students?

My advice is don’t be nervous when attending college here. The faculty/staff is so welcoming and understanding. If you are not able to make it to class, just email your professor, and they will fill you in on what you missed. They are also super flexible. Just tell them your situation, and they will be able to give you the best advice on what to do going forward.
