MARSHFIELD – The National Merit Scholarship program has named Columbus Catholic High School’s Mark Fieweger as a 2022 semifinalist.

Through the annual program, about 50,000 academically-talented high school students are honored, but only about 16,000 are named semifinalists.

Students who qualify as semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) have an opportunity to advance to the finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 7,600 students will be chosen as Merit Scholarship winners.

“To realize when 1.6 million college-bound students in the country take the PSAT, it is astounding to have a student from our small school become a semifinalist,” said Greg Brown, Columbus Catholic High School counselor.  “That means Mark’s score was in the top 16,000, or in other words, the top 1 percent. When Mark was in middle school I remember teachers mentioning how sharp he was and that he will do remarkable things in the future.  They were right.”
